چکیده

We present a method for reconstructing the phonon relaxation time distribution τω = τ (ω) (including polarization) in a material from thermal spectroscopy data. The distinguishing feature of this approach is that it does not make use of the effective thermal conductivity concept and associated approximations. The reconstruction is posed as an optimization problem in which the relaxation times τω = τ (ω) are determined by minimizing the discrepancy between the experimental relaxation traces and solutions of the Boltzmann transport equation for the same problem. The latter may be analytical, in which case the procedure is very efficient, or numerical. The proposed method is illustrated using Monte Carlo solutions of thermal grating relaxation as synthetic experimental data. The reconstruction is shown to agree very well with the relaxation times used to generate the synthetic Monte Carlo data and remains robust in the presence of uncertainty (noise).

Analytical Green’s function of the multidimensional frequency-dependent phonon Boltzmann equation

Thermal phonon transport at length scales comparable to mean free paths is governed by the Boltzmann equation, which is challenging to solve due to its high dimensionality. Here, we present an analytical Green’s function for the frequency-dependent, multidimensional Boltzmann equation under the relaxation-time approximation. The new analytical solution is valid from diffusive to ballistic trans...

Quantitative validation of the Boltzmann transport equation phonon thermal conductivity model under the single-mode relaxation time approximation

The phonon thermal conductivity of the Lennard-Jones argon face-centered cubic crystal is predicted between temperatures of 20 K and 80 K using the Boltzmann transport equation under the single-mode relaxation time approximation. The temperature and frequency dependencies of the phonon dispersion and phonon relaxation times are obtained from lattice-dynamics calculations based on the results of...

Thermal Transport in Crystals as a Kinetic Theory of Relaxons

Thermal conductivity in dielectric crystals is the result of the relaxation of lattice vibrations described by the phonon Boltzmann transport equation. Remarkably, an exact microscopic definition of the heat carriers and their relaxation times is still missing: Phonons, typically regarded as the relevant excitations for thermal transport, cannot be identified as the heat carriers when most scat...

Monte Carlo formulation of ab initio phonon transport and its application to the study of kinetic effects in graphene ribbons MASSACHUSET -

We present a deviational Monte Carlo method for solving the Boltzmann equation for phonon transport subject to the linearized ab initio 3-phonon scattering operator. Phonon dispersion relations and transition rates are obtained from density functional theory calculations. The ab initio scattering operator replaces the commonly used relaxation-time approximation, which is known to neglect, among...
